IRS Extends Tax Season 2021

The IRS has announced that it will extend the filing season until Monday, May 17, 2021. This one-month extension is for filing and payment.

This allows you an additional 30 days to pay taxes without penalty and interest. If you are unable to file by May 17th, you will still need to make an estimated payment by that date and file an extension of time to file, which will give you until October 15, 2021 to send in your return.

If you are expecting a refund, it's best to go ahead and file your return. If you are due a refund for 2017 and have not filed a tax return, your deadline is still April 15, 2021. After that you have forfeited your refund.

Estimated payments due April 15th have not been extended.

The federal tax filing deadline postponement to May 17, 2021, only applies to individual federal income returns and tax (including tax on self-employment income) payments otherwise due April 15, 2021, not state tax payments or deposits or payments of any other type of federal tax.
